Stockbridge GA
Alphonso Thomas

Alphonso Thomas is a lifelong resident of Stockbridge and is currently retired.

Alphonso's community service spans more than 40 years, dating back to his professional career as a youth advocate for Economic Opportunity Atlanta in the Perry Homes housing projects and as a community organization specialist developing Neighborhood Planning Units in the Auburn Avenue Communities of the Old Fourth Ward, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown and Bedford Pines neighborhoods.

Alphonso has utilized his career experience and leadership to work toward making Stockbridge a better place to live, work and enjoy.

Alphonso serves as President of the Stockbridge Civic Association, a local community organization he co-founded in 1991 where he has advocated for sidewalks and lighting in much needed areas of the City, and where he was also instrumental with securing over $600,000 of CDBG funding for home renovations and repairs in the Tye Street area.

Alphonso's community efforts and involvement also include: Steering Committee member to bring the Boys and Girls Club to the City of Stockbridge, Annual African American Heritage Celebration, Smith-Barnes Elementary “Save our School” Community Activist, Boy and Girl Scouts projects, Honored with Mentors Pin in 2015, Partnered with Fuller Center for Housing and Avalon Hope Church; Annual Memorial Cemetery clean-up; Project coordinator for Hands on Henry; Annual Don’t Trash Stockbridge campaign; Annual Back to School kick-off with free school supplies; Coordinated the Stockbridge Interfaith Community Prayer Vigil; Spearheaded the M. L. King, Sr. Heritage Trail Street naming; First recognition and celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month in the City; Spearheaded the return of the annual City's Annual Memorial Day March and Veterans Day Parade.

Alphonso's priorities for the City are dedicated to building a strong and vibrant city through community partnerships and collaborations with local agencies, prioitizing safe neighborhoods, economic prosperity, supporting local businesses, enrichment  of youth and seniors services, sound infrastructure and early childhood education.

Alphonso believes the City’s strengths are a combination of location, history and rich heritage. Stockbridge is in a great metro location with easy access to I-75 (two exit ramps) and I-675, and in close proximity to the airport and downtown Atlanta. Couple the location with a strong community of citizens, organizations and businesses. The downtown area of Stockbridge and surrounding areas near and around City Hall present great opportunities of redevelopment and revitalization. Alphonso understands the importance of the City receiving designation from the State of Georgia for its historic churches, schools, cemeteries and other landmarks and pledges to work to preserve those areas.

Alphonso will also make every effort to continuously improve city services and create a better quality of life for all citizens, and believes as the city grows, demands grow. The City's Comprehensive Land Use Plan, transportation and infrastructure planning is instrumental for improving the future.

Says Alphonso Thomas, "I am an elected official to serve the citizens of Stockbridge — to be a voice for their issues. Future Forward!"
